TRI COUNTY REPORT FOR NOVEMBER 14TH, 2022

State Police in Mercer County report a fatal accident from Friday night the shut down a portion of Interstate 79 for several hours. According to police 18-year-old Mateo Guajardo of Pittsburgh lost control of the vehicle as he was driving south on I-79 in New Vernon Township just after 8 o’clock.  The vehicle struck an embankment, landing in the northbound lane where it was struck on the passenger side by an oncoming pickup truck. A passenger 19-year-old Danielle Duncan of Pittsburgh, died in the crash.  Guarado was taken to Allegheny Hospital in Grove City with serious injuries. The driver of the pickup was not hurt.

Republican Doug Mastriano is officially conceding to Josh Shapiro in the race for Pennsylvania governor.  The Trump-endorsed candidate released a statement acknowledging victory for Shapiro on Twitter yesterday, thanking his team, his wife, and running mate Carrie DelRosso.  Mastriano went on to ask supporters to give his opponent the opportunity to lead.  Shapiro will be sworn in on January 17th.

State Police in Lawrence County are investigating an alleged sexual assault. Police said an individual came into the New Castle State Police barracks yesterday afternoon to report the incident. No other details were released.

One person was taken to the hospital following a two vehicle accident in Butler County. According to police 57 year old Pamela Chesonis of Slippery Rock was traveling north on Hilliard Road when she crossed the center line and struck a vehicle operated by a 17 year old female Hilliards. The teen was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital for treatment. Police said Chesonis was charged with driving under the influence.  

Outdoor recreation had a positive impact on Pennsylvania’s economy in 2021.  According to US Bureau of Economic Analysis statistics outdoor recreation contributed nearly 14 billion dollars to Pennsylvania’s economy in 2021, an increase of 22 percent from 2020. The new data also shows that outdoor recreation accounts for 152,000 jobs in PA and 1.6 percent of the state’s Gross Domestic Product. Pennsylvania has the 6th largest outdoor recreation economy in the country.

A Lawrence County man was killed Thursday afternoon in a Butler County motorcycle crash. State police said 36-year-old Roy Herr of Wampum lost control on Glade Mill Road and drove into a guide rail along the road. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.

The new year will bring additional direct flights between Pittsburgh International Airport and London Heathrow.  British Airways currently operates four flights each week between the two cities but says they will add an additional flight in April of 2023 and another in May.  British Airways is the only airline that offers nonstop flights between the two airports.

Police across the state have been cracking down on motorists who break the Move Over Law or who drive aggressively. About 300 police departments and Pennsylvania State Police are taking part in the effort. The latest wave of enforcement has focused on speeding, tailgating, and violations of the Move Over Law. That ordinance requires drivers who come upon an emergency response area to either move into another lane or pass the area at no more than 20-miles-per-hour less than the posted speed limit.

More than 40 people from around the region have been honored for donating their organs.  A ceremony was held Sunday for the donors who were called heroes for participating in the Gift of Life Donor Program in Harrisburg.  The celebration featured candle lighting, live music, and a photographic tribute.  Officials with the nonprofit organ donation program says one organ donor can save the lives of up to eight people and that tissue donors can change the lives of more than 100 recipients.
