The Pennsylvania House State Government Committee will soon be debating a bill that would end automatic yearly pay raises for lawmakers. The Bill’s Sponsor, Democrat Gerald Mullery reasoned that most PA residents cannot expect an automatic pay raise every year so neither should their representatives. The bill was submitted about a week after an automatic annual pay raise increased the salaries of legislators by nearly $5,000; Mullery’s proposal would repeal the Public Official Compensation Law of 1983 which facilitated the pay raise.
