An Amish woman and four children are injured, and another child is dead, after an SUV collided with a horse and buggy in East Fallowfield Township, Crawford County on Thursday afternoon. Melinda Troyer, and the five children were all thrown from the buggy shortly before 3PM when police say Jean Jewel attempted to pass them on Route 18 and collided with the left rear of their transport. All occupants of the horse drawn cart were hospitalized at Meadville Medical Center except for the newborn child which died at Pittsburgh Children’s Hospital on Friday.

This week is National Child Passenger Safety Week and the Pennsylvania State Police will be holding child safety seat fitting events across the state, including our region. On Wednesday, September 22nd the State Police in Franklin will be holding their event from 3PM to 9PM at Rocky Grove Volunteer Fire Department. The Clarion State Police also hold theirs on Wednesday from 2PM to 8PM at Clarion Ford.
The Pennsylvania State Police encourage people with young children to take advantage of these safety checks because seats are often incorrectly installed; a correctly installed safety seat can reduce the risk of injury or death of a child by 70%.
