The Pennsylvania State Police will be out in force for Labor Day weekend, patrolling and setting up checkpoints for aggressive or reckless driving, speeding, and DUI. Authorities have also issued a reminder about Pennsylvania’s new ‘Move Over’ Law, which came into effect this year and requires motorists to change lanes if possible or reduce their speed to 20 miles per hour below the posted speed limit when approaching an emergency scene or traffic stop.

Clean up and rescue efforts are still underway in large swaths of the state after Tropical Storm Ida passed through the commonwealth on Wednesday and Thursday. The storm mostly skipped over our region, but it blanketed nearly the entire rest of the state in 5 to 10 inches of rainfall and even reportedly spawned tornadoes in some counties. Flooding and wind damage are so widespread that PennDOT reported 389 road closings and 16 closings on interstate and express highways yesterday. The PA Fish and Boat Commission has issued a statewide warning for all of Pennsylvania about high water conditions on lakes and rivers and advises anyone on the water this Labor Day weekend to avoid quick moving or muddy and low visibility water for their own safety.
