It’s time for the weekly COVID-19 update. Nearly 9.5 million COVID-19 vaccines have been distributed across the state of Pennsylvania, not including statistics for the Philadelphia area. More than half of all Pennsylvania residents have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine and more than four million individuals aged 16 and older are fully vaccinated. The CDC and FDA approved the Pfizer vaccine for use in children as young as 12 years earlier this week. Infection rates for COVID are slowing; from Wednesday May 5th to Wednesday May 12th only 14,198 new cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed around the state and somewhat less than 80,000 residents are currently sick with the disease. 1,181,279 confirmed cases of COVID across the state have exacted a heavy toll; 26,697 deaths and tens of thousands more left stricken with potentially permanent effects from the disease.
