According to PennDOT, 2020 had the second lowest recorded incidents of traffic fatalities in commonwealth history. While traffic fatalities were still higher than the safest year on record, which is 2019, it was by about 6%, or 70 fatalities, which is below the national average. 1,129 traffic fatalities were recorded in Pennsylvania last year which is up from 1,059 in 2019. Fatalities decreased in accidents involving senior citizens, head on collisions, side collisions, opposite direction collisions, and distracted driving; while there were increases in deaths from crashes involving speeding, motorcycles, single vehicles, and along local roads not maintained by PennDOT.
