The first round of grants to make improvements to lake Erie and its tributaries issued through Act 56 of 2020 came to a total of nearly $650,000. Act 56 allows money raised from anglers buying the Lake Erie Fishing permits on their fishing licenses to be used on an expanded amount of lakeside projects. Projects which received grant funding include the construction of a handicapped accessible fishing area at West Holland Street Pier, a fish cleaning station with a refrigerated area for charter and recreational fishermen to clean their catch on Lampe Marina, improvements to Avonia Beach, and The Regional Science Consortium’s Lake Erie Buoy Project.
Pennsylvania’s acting Secretary of State Veronica Degraffenreid says more than 626,000 Pennsylvanians have requested a mail in or absentee ballot for the upcoming primary election on May 18th. The deadline to request a mail-in ballot for the primary is May 11th and a filled in ballot must arrive at your county voting office by 8PM on election day.
An arrest has finally been made in a 44 year old murder case in Northeastern Pennsylvania. A now 63 year old man named Luis Sierra was arrested for the 1976 murder of a 15 year old girl named Evelyn Colon thanks to recent advances in DNA forensics. Evelyn Colon was pregnant when she was found dismembered along the bank of the Lehigh River in East Side Pennsylvania in 1976 and was only identified recently thanks to DNA tests. Once she was identified police were able to connect her to the alleged murderer. Sierra had been living in Ozone Park, New York since after the murder.
