Pennsylvania State Representative Frank Ryan filed articles of impeachment against Justice David Wecht of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court on Wednesday. Ryan is a Republican representing Lebanon County and wrote a letter where he tries to explain his reasoning. In his letter Representative Ryan argues that Justice Wecht has demonstrated a blatant disregard for the rule of law over the course of five years and has eroded the separation of powers between the executive and legislative branches of the commonwealth’s government. He only specifically cites the Justice’s writing of the majority opinion upholding Governor Wolf’s reissuing of an emergency declaration in regards to COVID-19 after the General Assembly tried to end it through legislation. Chief Justice of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court Thomas Saylor was dismissive of Ryan’s intent to file the articles earlier this week.
State Representative Aaron Bernstine has refused to step down from office after calls from both Republicans and Democrats for his resignation after now deleted videos on social media allegedly showed him urging his son to smoke a cigar and use foul language were brought to their attention.
