Pennsylvania’s Secretary of Health, Dr. Rachel Levine, is urging Pennsylvania residents over six months of age to prioritize receiving a flu vaccine this year. While we await a safe and effective vaccine for COVID-19 receiving a vaccine for influenza can help prevent tying up resources that could be used to treat the far more serious disease which has similar symptoms. During last year’s flu season 130,000 Pennsylvania residents were diagnosed with the flu which led to the deaths of 102 patients. Contrast that to the more than 140,000 cases of COVID which have caused nearly 8,000 deaths since March of this year. The CDC recommends the flu vaccine for everyone over six months of age unless they have a diagnosed medical condition which prevents them.
