Butler Health System, an organization that includes Clarion Hospital among its facilities, has announced its getting rid of 67 employees and eliminating dozens of job openings. 10 employees have been furloughed and another 57 were laid off due to the financial strain its hospitals have felt since the outbreak of SARS CoV2 coronavirus. Butler Health System has also eliminated 60 vacant positions within its ranks.

 

The Speaker of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, Mike Turzai, has stepped down and officially ended his tenure in office as a member of the General Assembly. Turzai announced his resignation from office last week; earlier in the year he had announced he had no plans to run for re-election in 2020. Turzai had been a representative for more than a decade and spent the last five years as Speaker.

 

As of Friday, Pennsylvania has reached a new milestone in testing for COVID-19. Across the state as many as 15,000 new tests for the disease are being performed daily and infection rates are at their lowest point since March 25th. 75% of all infected patients have recovered though the disease’s death toll is now over 6,200 in the state. Eight more counties will be moved into the green phase on Friday, but Erie is still not among them.
