The Speaker for the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, Mike Turzai, tendered his resignation from the General Assembly yesterday. Turzai has been Speaker for the last five years and announced he would not be seeking re-election in January, but now he has announced that he will be leaving his office ahead of the 2020 election. Speaker Turzai’s resignation is effective on Monday.

Governor Tom Wolf has said he will fight against the General Assembly’s resolution that says he must end the state of emergency for COVID-19 which he renewed for 90 days earlier this month. While addressing the resolution the governor explained that ending the state of emergency would not reopen any businesses nor end the phased county by county reopening, but it would eliminate a number of protections for residents of the state and end the state’s eligibility for federal relief money. Meanwhile the Republican lead Senate passed a bill that would be the first step to amending Pennsylvania’s constitution to reduce the governor’s power over declaring emergencies.
