The Department of Health has confirmed that COVID-19, the Coronavirus, has made its way into the State of Pennsylvania. Though the number of cases is low and currently restricted to three eastern counties the Wolf Administration’s response has been quick and decisive and the governor has already declared a State of Disaster within 24 hours of the first reported cases. Governor Wolf is also seeking authorization from the legislature for the possibility to declare a public health emergency. Symptoms of the COVID-19 coronavirus include fever, coughing, and a shortness of breath, and are usually mild in most cases, but can cause severe problems for the elderly and people with immune system disorders. You can protect yourself from catching or spreading the disease in the same manner you can prevent influenza, by washing your hands often for at least 20 seconds with soap and water, cleaning surfaces such as counters, light switches, and smart phones often, and if you are sick; sneezing or coughing into your elbows. If you are feeling sick with COVID symptoms it is also recommended that you get tested for the virus and then isolate yourself from the public as much as possible.
