Announcements

Due to the seasonal change to winter operations and winter shifts, PennDOT District 1 is suspending weekly publication of county maintenance schedules following this week’s release. Employees at PennDOT will continue to work on patching roads, clearing brush, ditching, and other maintenance activities as time and conditions permit. Their primary focus, however, will be on winter maintenance preparations and operations, and keeping roads safe and passable. District 1 will resume publication of weekly county maintenance schedules in the spring.

Crawford County

Preparation work will begin later this month on a project to replace the bridge that carries Route 6 over French Creek in Cambridge Springs Borough, Crawford County. The bridge is located on Route 6 (Main Street) between the intersections with McClellan Street (Route 1006) and Route 408 (Church Street). Construction will include replacement of the 203-foot-long steel truss bridge with a two-span concrete bridge. Work will also include new roadway approaches, paving, curb ramps, and sidewalks. The project will require a detour, which will be posted using Grant Street (Route 1025) and McClellan Street. The work is expected to start with upgrades to the detour route on October 14, 2019, weather permitting. The current bridge is expected to be closed to all motorized traffic on November 1, 2019, and the new bridge opened by October 30, 2020.
A pedestrian detour will be in place starting March 18, 2020, and remain in place until the new bridge opens. The entire project is expected to be completed by December 7, 2020. The existing bridge was built in 1901. It is classified poor condition. It has a weight limit of 11-tons and has been closed to truck traffic since June 2019. Approximately 6,200 vehicles per day use the bridge, on average. The contractor is Clearwater Construction, Inc. of Mercer, PA. The contract cost is $3,816,000, which is to be paid with 20 percent state funds and 80 percent federal funds.

Nighttime paving is scheduled to take place at the roundabout at the intersection of Route 6/322, Route 19, and Route 98 in Vernon Township, Crawford County next week. The work is expected to be completed over three nights, weather permitting. Paving operations will run nightly from 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM, starting at 6:00 PM Monday, October 14, 2019, and ending at 6:00 AM Thursday, October 17, 2019. After the paving is complete, final pavement markings will be painted and the intersection will be opened as a fully functioning multi-lane, hybrid roundabout. For an instructional video on navigating the improved intersection, go online to PennDOT’s website www.penndot.gov/BigIRoundabout or the PennDOT YouTube Channel.  The roundabout project is designed to improve safety and traffic flow at the intersection. It includes upgrades to drainage, highway lighting and signs, as well as new sidewalks and curb ramps, all within the footprint of the former signalized intersection. The project is expected to be completed by October 25, 2019, weather permitting.

Venango County

Traffic restrictions on Atlantic Avenue (Route 4004) in the City of Franklin, Venango County will be in place Monday, October 14, 2019. The roadway will be closed to through traffic as paving is completed. Access to homes and businesses along the street will be maintained. Motorists are encouraged to take other routes whenever possible. PennDOT urges motorists to slow down when driving in work zones, and also to be alert to changing conditions, avoid distractions and to pay attention to signs and flaggers. Drive responsibly in work zones for your safety and the safety of the workers.
