Tri County Report For December 10th, 2018

A New Castle man is behind bars, accused of shooting a teenage boy.  Police say 19 year old Kyle Harris gunned down 15-year-old Zach Mulford while he was removing bullets from his gun Saturday at Harris’ home.  Harris is charged with involuntary manslaughter. The shooting took place early Saturday morning at a home on North Liberty Street.

Charges are pending against the suspect in a Beaver County house fire.  Police took a Harmony Township man into custody Saturday after the Wilson Avenue blaze was knocked down.  No injuries were reported.

State Police in Lawrence County report a juvenile is suspected of stealing two credit cards and going on a spending spree. According to police the incident took place back in October. The victims are two Wampum residents. Allegedly the juvenile made 25 transactions on the cards in Lawrence, Beaver, Butler and Allegheny Counties, amounting to a total of nearly 19 hundred dollars. The investigation is continuing.

A Butler woman faces charges following an accident in Lawrence County. State Police report 32 year old Tonya Durand of Prospect lost control of her vehicle on Pleasant Hill Road in Prospect and struck a utility pole. She was transported to UPMC Cranberry then flown to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh. A passenger, 36 year old Ryan Waller of Butler County fled the scene. He was later found at Ellwood City Hospital and was taken into custody. Police said Durand will be charged with driving under the influence.

Dozens of Beaver County military families will have Christmas trees to celebrate around this year.  Free trees were given away to 500 families this past weekend at the Community College of Beaver County in Central Township.  Trees For Troops organizers say they’ve been doing this for 18 years.

A Beaver woman will serve six months in jail after being sentenced for striking a bicyclist with her car in Chippewa Township in June.  Sherry Stenger pleaded guilty to striking the bike with her car on Darlington Road and leaving the scene.  The 23-year-old will also serve 24-months in an Intermediate Punishment program following the Wednesday sentencing.

State Police in Butler County report a two car accident in Slippery Rock Township. According to police 20 year old Kylee Stefura of Koppell was failed to stop at the intersection of Kiester Road and Cameron Drive and sturck a car operated by 19 year old Elliot Peterman of Pittsburgh. Police said Peterman was taken to Grove City Medical Center for treatment. Stefura was not hurt.

53 year old Matthew Smith of Ambridge was sentenced this past Friday to five years in prison for selling crack cocaine. The sentenced was handed down in Pittsburgh Federal Court. Smith was charged with conspiring with others to distribute and possess with intent to distribute 28 grams or more of crack. A number of agencies assisted in the investigation.

The state has given the New Castle Municipal Airport $112,500 to acquire equipment to maintain airfields there. According to the Ellwood City Ledger Twenty-six airports in the state were funded through $2.2 million from the PennDOT’s Aviation Development Program, which receives money from the state’s jet fuel tax, and $4 million from the MultiModal Fund.
