Tri County Report For November 14th, 2018

The suspects in a New Castle triple-murder will remain jailed while they await trial.  Steven Procopio pleaded not guilty yesterday to criminal homicide, while Jody Hammer waived her preliminary hearing on obstruction of justice charges.  Anthony Cooper faced a judge for the first time since his extradition from Michigan last week.  The group is charged in last month’s shooting deaths of Nichole Pumphrey, her ten-year-old daughter and family friend Lawrence Cannon.

The commonwealth of Pennsylvania is saying more about its unsuccessful offer to lure Amazon’s HQ2.  Governor Tom Wolf’s administration says its offer included up to four-point-six billion in taxpayer-paid incentives over 25 years.  It also offered another 100-million for improvements in transportation.  Amazon chose to split its HQ2 project between Chrystal City, Virginia and New York City.

Police say a deadly shooting in Butler and a nearby stabbing last week are related.  The shooting occurred Friday morning on South Wagner Avenue near West Cunningham Street.  A family member tells WPXI-TV Adam Selfridge was killed in the shooting.  About a mile away, another man was found with stab wounds.  Police aren’t explaining how the two incidents are connected.

The FBI is now investigating a bar brawl last month in South Side involving undercover police officers and members of the Pagans Motorcycle Club.  It happened at Kopy’s Bar, with several members of the gang charged.  The officers have come under scrutiny for allegations of excessive use of force.  The gang members’ preliminary hearing is set for Friday.

A Beaver Falls man is found guilty of sexually assaulting a woman for more than a decade.  The judge announced the verdict against 49-year-old Richard Holewski Tuesday and sent him to Beaver County Jail to await sentencing in February.  Holewski is accused of assaulting a girl starting when she was seven-years-old, continuing into her 20s.

Republicans in the state House of Representatives are choosing Lancaster County’s Bryan Cutler as its Majority Leader.  Representative Cutler replaced outgoing leader Dave Reed.  Representative Mike Turzai is expected to be reelected as Speaker of the House.

According to this week’s Triple-A East Central gas price report Gas prices in Western Pennsylvania are down by a nickel this week at $2.94 per gallon. November continues to bring gas price averages under $3 for every state in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast region. In New Castle drivers are paying 2.85 a gallon while drivers in Sharon are paying more at 2.98. The national gas price average is $2.70. That price is six cents less than last week, 21-cents less than last month and just 14-cents more than last year.

Volunteer firefighters across Pennsylvania are getting a share of more than 55-million dollars for new equipment, training, and member’s insurance.  Auditor General Eugene DePasquale announced Tuesday more than 25-hundred municipalities will get part of the fire relief association funding.  The money is generated from a two-percent tax on fire insurance premiums purchased by state residents from out-of-state companies.

A Butler man was arrested for allegedly attempting to sell cocaine. According to Inside Butler County 29 year old Jacob Vandevort-Renforth, was charged with possession of drugs with the intent to deliver. The Butler County Drug Task Force arrested Vandevort-Ranforth on Friday at a apartment in the 300 block of North Main Street. He’s in the Butler County Jail on Bond.
