The New Castle News is reporting that A New Castle man involved in a South Side accident that seriously injured another driver is now wanted by police in connection with that collision. City police on Monday filed charges against 59 year old Arthur Costas Hazimanolis in an accident that injured 85 year old Thomas Eakin, of Shenango Township. Hazimanolis is being charged with aggravated assault by vehicle while driving under the influence, accident involving death or personal injury of someone not properly licensed, DUI along with a number of other charges. Hazimanolis was also involed in another accident on East Washington Street at Junior High Street. His blood alcohol level was .244 percent. Thomas Eakin continues to recover.
Nearly two dozen marijuana plants are seized after a raid on a Beaver County home on Labor Day. Police found the between four and eight-foot-tall plants growing behind a fence at the home on Irwin Street in Aliquippa. Police charged 40-year-old Tychonn McCoy with drug and firearms offenses.
Police are charging two people for dumping the body of a drug overdose victim in a vehicle in White Township. Carley Wiley and Frederick Cepris were charged last week after they allegedly left the body of 29-year-old Ryan Chiappetta of Big Beaver inside a vehicle near 23rd Street and 11th Avenue August 22nd. It’s believed Chiappetta died at Wiley’s home on the 28-hundred block of 20th Street Extension a day earlier. The two are in Beaver County Jail in lieu of 50-thousand dollars bail.
Weekend sobriety check points netted six people accused of driving under the influence in Butler County. The checkpoint took place in several different spots around Butler county Saturday and Sunday. State police handed out 19 traffic citations and 13 written warnings. Troopers also made two criminal arrests.
Butler County authorities are investigating the death of a man whose body was found near Slippery Rock University. The coroner’s office says the body was found yesterday at the Campus Edge Apartments after tenants complained of a strong smell. There’s no word yet on the man’s identity.
A Greensburg woman is awaiting sentencing for selling a three-year-old girl for sex. Rebecca Shadle pleaded guilty in Westmoreland County yesterday to human trafficking, child endangering and other charges. Shadle admitted to taking money from men who had sexual contact with the child.
According to this week’s Triple-A East Central Gas Price Report Gas prices in Western Pennsylvania are up by about a penny over the week to $3.10 a gallon. Gas prices continue to trend flat across the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast states. In New Castle prices are averaging 3.06 a gallon while in Sharon drivers are paying less at 3.01. At $2.83, the national gas price average is trending lower toward gas prices that motorists haven’t seen since early May. The national gas price average is one-cent less on the week, four-cents cheaper than last month, but still 19-cents more than a year ago.
Giant Eagle is buying a former Toys R Us location near the Beaver Valley Mall. The location reportedly sold for three-point-seven-five million dollars after being put up for auction following the company’s bankruptcy. Giant Eagle officials have not announced any plans for the building yet.
Another day of scorching temperatures will force some western Pennsylvania schools to send students home early. Dismissal times are being moved up again today in the Armstrong, Butler Area, Central Greene, Greensburg Salem, Indiana Area, Laurel Highlands and Mount Pleasant schools. Officials say they can’t keep students safe in buildings without air conditioning.
