Tri County Report For May 29th, 2018

A teen is dead after drowning during a Memorial Day swim in the Connoquenessing Creek.  Investigators say they pulled two 17-year-olds from the creek near Pittsburgh Circle in Ellwood City Monday afternoon, but could not find a third.  Lawrence County officials identified the third 17-year-old as Bruce Thomas of New Castle.

Officials say two people are recovering after reportedly being struck by lightning in Beaver County.  Authorities were called to the 100-block of Kennedy Drive in Center Township Monday evening.  Family members said they initially called 911 after they thought a tree was struck.

State Police in Butler County have released figures from a sobriety checkpoint that took place over the Memorial Day Weekend. Police said 163 vehicles were contacted and there was one DUI arrest one summary traffic citation and one misdemeanor criminal arrest. The checkpoint and roving patrols took place at various locations in the county.

A Sharpsville man faces charges following a traffic stop in Union Township on Friday afternoon. According to police 34 year old  Timothy Mayerchak was stopped for several traffic violations on West Washington Street when it was determined Mayerchak was under the influence of a controlled susbstance and was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence. Police said charges will be filed after lab test results.

Police say a Monday morning chase ended with a crash on Route 19 in Butler County.  Authorities say a driver fled police near North Park Lounge in Cranberry early Monday at speeds more than 20-miles-per-hour-over the posted speed limit.  About eight minutes after the chase started, the 45-year-old driver crashed over an embankment near the Jackson – Lancaster townships border and rolled. The driver was taken to the hospital for several injuries.

Officials say a large Aliquippa apartment building is still without air conditioning after it went out Thursday.  Residents who live in the five-story building say they haven’t found any relief from window fans.  Some residents tell WPXI-TV most of the people in the building are senior citizens with health issues.  Members of building management told residents they would be out to fix the air conditioning Tuesday.

State Police in Butler County report a one car accident in Donegal Township Friday night. Police said 50 year old Kurt Camus was southbound on Gameland Road when he lost control of his vehicle first struck a mailbox then rolled over several times. Camus was taken to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital for treatment of what police said where serious injuries. The investigation into the accident is ongoing.

A major construction project in Pittsburgh’s Strip District starts Tuesday.  PWSA crews begin to replace water and sewer lines Tuesday, removing hundreds of parking spots from 16th to 21st streets and forcing Smallman Street down to one lane.  The project is expected to be completed by January 2019.

A motorcycle rider is dead after an accident Monday in Westmoreland County.  Investigators say 29-year-old Bruce Miklavic of Richland Township was riding along Route 981 near Shannon Lane in Derry Township when another vehicle crossed the center line and struck the motorcycle.  Miklavic and his passenger were thrown from the motorcycle with Miklavic pronounced dead at the scene.
