Tri County Report For February 28th, 2018

A pair of New Castle teenagers are charged in the Sunday night double murder of two other teens.  Prosecutors say 17-year-olds Caden Popovich and Donovon Miller are facing criminal homicide charges in the shooting deaths of 19-year-olds Cameron Martwinski and Justin Luca.  Court records say the shooting started over a marijuana deal.  Popovich and Miller are in Lawrence County Jail being held without bond. Both will be tried as adults.

Pennsylvania’s new congressional district map is being implemented as planned.   The state Supreme Court shot down a request by high-ranking Republicans in the state House and Senate to delay activating the new lines until after the upcoming primary election.  Congressional candidates started circulating petitions to get on the May primary ballot in between the new district lines Tuesday.

Fire crews say a Beaver County couple was rescued from their burning home Tuesday morning.  First responders in Independence Township say they were called to the home in a rural area near Route 30 around 10 a.m.  Firefighters say they had to pump water from a nearby creek to battle the blaze.

Some congressional incumbents are asking a new group of constituents to support their bid to get on the May primary ballot in Pennsylvania.  Tuesday was the first day for those vying to win a seat in DC to obtain the necessary signatures to end up on the ballot.  Candidates have until March 20th to obtain the necessary signatures to get on the primary ballot.

Allegheny County Health officials say two more people have died from flu complications.  The death toll for the flu in the county is now 19 this season.  Representatives say a woman in her early 80s and a man in his early 70s died within the last week. A health department spokesperson says they are seeing a downward trend in flu activity but aren’t sure if it has peaked.

Two PA senators are introducing legislation that will create an alert system to help find someone suspected of injuring or killing a police officer.  Republican Senators John Rafferty and Randy Vulakovich say the Blue Alert system would speed up the capture of violent criminals who have already hurt or killed those meant to protect the public.  The two say the Blue Alert system would activate a similar emergency alert response like the Amber Alert.  The representatives say 30 states already have a Blue Alert system in place.

According to this week’s Triple-A gas price report, Gas prices in Western Pennsylvania are steady this week at $2.85 per gallon. In New Castle the average price is at 2.76 a gallon while drivers in Sharon are paying 2.74.  At $2.52, the national gas price average is the cheapest pump price seen this month.  The national gas price average for the month of February is $2.56, which is 29-cents more expensive than average of February 2017.  On the week, gas prices decreased 1 cent.

Grove City Police are looking for a suspect who allegedly stole two money boxes from a business on Erie Street. Police have reason to believe the burglary occurred sometime from Monday night to early Tuesday morning. WFMJ-TV reports Police say the unknown suspect entered the business and took two money boxes, with an undetermined amount of cash in them. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Grove City Police department.

The Lawrence County Democratic Party will be holding their quarterly meeting tomorrow night at the Moose Club on South Mercer Street. There will be also a number of petitions for signing for individuals running for state committee along with local precinct people. The event will begin at 6pm and refreshments will be served.
