PA Lawmakers Approve Pension Reform *UPDATE*

Governor Tom Wolf indicates support for plan

Harrisburg, PA –

In an effort to save money in the future Pennsylvania’s General Assembly recently passed a bipartisan bill to overhaul the pension system offered to state workers. Senate Bill 1 will soon reach the desk of Governor Wolf who has indicated he will sign it; it will create a new pension plan similar to a 401(k) for all new state employees hired after 2018. The law creating the 401(k) style plans is modeled after systems used in 18 other states and is expected to save about $8 billion. In the last seven years alone the amount of money owed for pensions in Pennsylvania has more than doubled from less than $30 billion to more than $62 billion in unplanned expenses.
