An Ashtabula, Ohio, man is fighting extradition to face aggravated murder and kidnapping charges in connection with the death of a 13-year-old girl. The Sharon Herald reports that officals in Ohio must now prove that 46 year old John Bove should be returned to their state to stand trial. Bove has been charged in the death of Kara Zdanczewski. The teen’s body was discovered May 11 in a field in Saybrook Township, Ashtabula County. According to an affidavit released this week, Bove has admitted to kidnapping and murdering the teen and setting her body on fire. Bove also said that he and another man kidnapped the teen because of a drug debt owed by the child’s father. Three other suspects also have been arrested in connection with the case.
Fire crews are investigating a small blaze at a northern Butler County chemical plant. The flames erupted yesterday morning in a hydrogenation unit at the Sonneborn Plant. The fire was small and employees managed to put it out before firefighters arrived. No one was injured.
State Police in Lawrence County report someone fraudulently used a North Beaver Township man’s credit card to purchase more than $600 worth of items online.Police said the incident took place back in March and the victim is a 68 year old man. Anyone with information is asked to contact the State Police New Castle barracks.
An Aliquippa assistant football coach accused of improper recruiting is expected to speak to the WPIAL board June 6th. Sherman McBride’s name was brought up earlier this month by Beaver Falls administrators due to the transfer of standout Malik Shepherd. WPIAL board members unanimously ruled Shepherd ineligible to play for the Quips, saying his transfer in April was for athletic reasons. Shepherd rushed for more than eleven-hundred yards and nine touchdowns last season as Beaver Falls won the state title.
Two men are charged in connection with the alleged rape of two woman in Greenville. WFMJ-TV reports Greenville police received a call Wednesday morning from a 20-year-old woman saying that she and her 19-year-old friend had been raped at a home on Plum Street. 29 year old Justin Harris of Masury and 27-year-old D’Andre Wilkins of Sharon were arrested in connection with the incident. Both men are charged with rape, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, and furnishing liquor to a minor. Harris and Wilkins were arraigned and placed in the Mercer County prison on bond.
More than two-million vehicles are expected on the Pennsylvania Turnpike over Memorial Day weekend so all lanes will be open. Crews are suspending maintenance work between 5 a.m. today and 11 p.m. Tuesday. The busiest times on the road will most likely be this afternoon and Monday evening.
Two Butler County teenagers are facing charges for allegedly throwing rocks at vehicles in Muddy Creek Township. The 13-and-14-year-old boys are accused of tossing the rocks from an overpass on to Interstate 79 on Friday and Saturday. Damages to the cars are estimated in the thousands. No one was seriously injured.
A Westmoreland County prosecutor wants a longer sentence for the so-called “selfie” killer. Assistant District Attorney Tom Grace has filed papers asking a county judge to reconsider the 15-to-30-year sentence given to Maxwell Morton last week. Morton was convicted of shooting his 16-year-old friend Ryan Mangan in the face while they were playing with a gun in the bedroom of a Jeanette home. Afterwards he took a picture of himself with Mangan’s lifeless body in the background and sent it to a friend. Earlier this week Morton’s attorney appealed the sentence saying it was too long.
35 year old Mellissa Sue Aponte plead guilty yesterday in Lawrence County Common Pleas Court in the killing of a North Beaver man back in May of 2015. Judge J.Craig Cox sentenced Aponte to seven-in-half to fifteen years in prison after she pleded guilty to third degree murder and conspiracy to commit robbery charges in the killing of 24 year old Frederick Swilling. The New Castle News reports Swilling’s body was found near Mohawk High School after he had been shot 19 times. Three other people have also been charged in connection with the killing.
