State Police in Lawrence County report a Beaver Falls man was taken to the hospital following a one vehicle in Scott Township. According to police 21 year old Andrew Proya was easbound on Harlansburgh road when his vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree. Proya was taken to St.Elizabeth’s Hospital in Youngstown for treatment.
The New Castle News reports 24 year old Zachary Jones of Ellwood City was sentenced in connection with his stephfather’s death. Jones was sentenced to 6 to 12 years in prison followed by four years of parole. Jones pled guilty to voluntary manslaughter and conspiracy to commit aggravated assault in connection to the beating death of 57 year old Gerald Lee Orock of Fombell back in December of 2014. Jones’ mother, 43 year old Lisa Marie Jones-Orock was sentenced back in May to 4/12 to 6 years in prison on the same charges.
Representative Mike Kelly is not running for governor. Kelly’s office released a statement Friday saying he believes the party already has a promising field of strong candidates. Kelly also said he will give “serious consideration” to a campaign in next year’s U.S. Senate race. Kelly is the representative for the third congressional district, which includes parts of Lawrence Butler, and Mercer counties.
Butler County is not adopting a vehicle fee. Commissioners voted unanimously against the charge last week, citing negative public response. If the measure had passed, the five-dollar fee would have been tacked on every time a vehicle was registered. It would have also earned the county a two-million-dollar incentive from PennDOT.
A $2.2 million project that will give motorists a smoother ride on Route 208 in Springfield and Pine Townships in Mercer County is expected to begin this week. Work will include replacement of a 10-foot bridge over Black Run with a precast reinforced concrete box culvert. The project is scheduled for completion by mid-October 2017. PennDot says the roadway is expected not to close until June 5.
Lawyers on both sides of Bill Cosby’s sexual assault case are in Allegheny County today as his trial gets underway. After twelve jurors and six alternates are picked, they’ll be moved to a Philadelphia suburb in Montgomery County where they’ll be sequestered for the entire trial. Cosby is accused of drugging and molesting former Temple employee Andrea Constand in his Montgomery County home in 2004. Cosby is expected to be in the courtroom for the process of assembling the jury.
Three people are recovering following a meth lab explosion in Fayette County. The blast occurred early yesterday morning in a duplex. A man and woman suffered chemical burns and a third person had minor injuries. Police described the blast as a “catastrophic event.”
State Police in Lawrence County report a one vehicle accident in Perry Township from last Monday. 26 year old Alisha Savan of Ellwood City was westbound on Route 488 when her vehicle left the roadway and struck a utility pole. Savan suffered a minor injury but was not taken to the hospital.
A Sharpsville man will be in court this week in connection with a motorcycle accident that claimed the life of 47 year old Paul Rosta of Union Township. 54 year old Scott Young has been charged with homicide by vehicle, aggravated assault by vehicle and several other charges including having a suspended vehicle registration. The New Castle News reports Rosta was traveling on his motorcycle on South Jefferson Street back in August of last year when Young pulled from an unnamed alley and struck Rosta who suffered massive injuries to his legs. He died two weeks later in a Pittsburgh Hospital
