Reno’s Rant: Politicism

So Todd Rundgren has a new album coming out called “White Knight”! It’s an interesting album of collaborations with artists such as Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails), Daryl Hall (Hall And Oates), Donald Fagen (Steely Dan), Joe Walsh (The Eagles) and Joe Satriani (Chicken Foot). I’ve never been a huge Todd Rundgren fan but it’s an interesting line, so I’d give it a listen.

My issue is with the growing attitude among the entertainment “elite” that was on display during a recent interview with Variety magazine. The interviewer ask about an anti-Trump song Rundgren wrote with Donald Fagen and how some fans react to it, especially at concerts. Rundgren said, “If I had the power, I’d say: If you’re a Trump supporter, don’t come to my show, because you won’t have a good time. And also, I don’t understand your frickin’ values. Because I’m not singing about that. If you don’t understand that basic thing, you’re just fooling yourself. I guarantee that in this show, if you’re a Trump supporter, you will likely be offended. Let the buyer beware! I mean, if you can’t take a joke, or you can’t admit that you’ve made a mistake, you don’t belong with the rest of us.”

Right or wrong, good decision or bad, mistake or not, half the country voted for Trump. Maybe the “frickin values” you don’t understand are the reason he won the election and Hilary Clinton didn’t. The people who voted for Trump believe in America and want a better America, just like those who voted for Hilary! They just believe in a different way of making that happen. You might not agree with that way but life is full of instances where we don’t always get what we want. That’s where you act like an adult and figure out how to make it work.

My problem is Rundgren’s attitude, which is indicative of how a lot of the entertainment industry act, that if, “you can’t admit that you’ve made a mistake, you don’t belong with the rest of us.” Far to often these days, singers, actors and other entertainers are taking it upon themselves to use their “celebrity” to influence popular opinion in regards to politics. And if you don’t agree with them you are labeled racist, bigot, nazi, commie, fascist, un-American, etc…. It’s the new form of sexism or racism, it’s politicism. If you don’t agree with my politics, then you kind isn’t welcome here!

The thing that’s always been great about America is that we have the freedom to think and feel however we want about anything we want. Right or wrong, we are free to think our conscience and free to conduct in open debate. But now the extremes of both sides of the political aisle seem to be ruling the roost. In a time when it seems the bulk of American is rushing toward the center, the political, media and the entertainment “elite” are clamoring to keep us divided. To what end? Just being right?

If there is anything I’ve learned in my life it’s that there are three sides to every story…yours, mine and the truth. I think the problems out great nation faces are looking for an answer along those same line. Not the Conservative answer, not the Liberal answer. I think the real answer is somewhere in the middle. But each side is too concerned with being right to realize that.

So unlike Todd Rundgren, I don’t care who you voted for or if you voted at all! Everyone is invited to listen free to The Bigg Show with Reno. I’m just here to, hopefully, entertain you…not tell you how to vote for!

Until next time….Cheers!
