Riot at Youth Correctional Facility


Emlenton PA – Three staff members were injured in a literal teenage riot at Western PA Child Care Youth Center. The riot at the Butler County facility was the fourth one in eight months and details are not forthcoming aside that it was incited by 18 year old Andre Plater from Philadelphia and involved four juveniles. The injured staff members are all residents of Venango and Clarion Countie; Brent Smrekar of Shippenville, obi Shick of Rimersburg and Gary Reed of Pleasantville. They were all treated at Clarion Hospital. Andre Plater who was the ringleader of rioters was charged with the third-degree felony of inciting a riot and a third-degree misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct while the juveniles all face charges of aggravated assault.

 

Former City Employee faces Embezzlement Trial


Union City PA –  A former secretary and Borough Manager of Union City is facing federal charges after allegedly embezzling over $200,000 to pay personal bills. It is alleged that between 2013 and 2016 Cheryl Capela used checks pre-signed by the borough council for emergencies and borough credit cards to buy groceries and personal items and racked up the massive amount of money. Capela had worked for Union City Borough for 26 years when she was fired after the discrepancy from her out of control spending was found and she is also being sued for the money she took.

 

Pennsylvania Swears in New Attorney General


Harrisburg PA – On Tuesday Pennsylvania swore in Josh Shapiro as its fourth Attorney General since August 2016.The Democrat was elected to the office last November while the state was still reeling from the scandal surrounding Kathleen Kane’s fraud conviction and many in Harrisburg believe he can restore the integrity of the office. During the ceremony Shapiro promised to aggressively pursue government corruption in Pennsylvania and listed consumer protections, gun violence, and the environment as priorities. During the ceremony Shapiro gave a small speech to the assembled “We will, in fact, rise to this challenge, We will, in fact, apply the law without fear or favor and infuse integrity in all that we do so that we can focus on best protecting you.”
