Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Kaine will be campaigning in Pittsburgh tomorrow. Kaine will be at Margaret Morrison Carnegie Hall at Carnegie Mellon University. Doors open at 12:15 p.m. and the event begins at 2:15 p.m. Kaine is expected to discuss Hillary Clinton’s plans for the economy and job creation.
Officials are confirming that a missing teenager is dead. Dane Mathesius was found behind an abandoned home in Aliquippa yesterday. His body was less than 500 feet from where 16-year-old William Booher was fatally shot last week during a drug deal gone bad. Investigators think Mathesius and Booher were selling marijuana and picked up Lawrence Reddick, who then pulled a gun, demanded money and shot Booher. Two other teens, who play for Aliquippa High School’s football team, are also facing charges. Police have not said how Mathesius died but are treating it as a homicide.
State Police in Lawrence County report a one car accident from early Sunday morning in Wayne Township. According to police 40 year old Samuel Ewing of Ellwood City was traveling on Bridge Street at the intersection of Smiley Stop road when he failed to negotiate a right hand bend and struck a sign and a tree. Police said Ewing suffered a minor injury but did not seek treatment.
The director of a locally based non-profit social services organization was accused Tuesday with misdirecting funds while she was treasurer of the Ellwood City Arts, Crafts and Food Festival. The Ellwood City Ledger reports 50 year old Suzanne Bleakney of Line Avenue who is thedirector of Ellwood City Community Partnership non-profit social services agency, was charged by the District Attorney’s office with theft and two counts of unlawful taking. Bleakney said Tuesday that she was unaware of the charges against her and had no comment. A summons was sent by mail to inform Bleakney of the charges. The alleged theft includes 700 dollars for unauthorized expenses, along with a shortage of $1,650 in cash payment to the festival for discounted early vendor registration fees. Bleakney was the festivals treasurer in 2015.
A Butler Township man is facing charges for allegedly selling fentanyl-laced heroin. Joshua Hakeem was arrested Monday and was charged with drug delivery resulting in death and involuntary manslaughter. Hakeem is accused of selling the heroin to John Kolakowski, who was found dead of an overdose last year at the Days Inn on Pittsburgh Road.
The Latrobe community is remembering Arnold Palmer. Thousands turned out for a public memorial for the golf legend yesterday at Saint Vincent College. Jack Nicklaus, Rickie Fowler, Bubba Watson, Lee Trevino and Phil Mickelson were just a few of the familiar faces who attended the event. Palmer died last month at the age of 87.
Police are investigating an attempted burlary at the Tick Toc Food Mart in New Castle early Monday morning. According to State Police the incident took place around 4:30 when an unknown suspced damaged the front door while trying to enter the store. The alarm sounded and no entry was made. The investigation is continuing.
A security guard at the Beaver Valley nuclear power station is out of a job. Officials say the guard recently allowed 150 people to go through the explosion detector even though it had a sign saying it was out of order. The guard was caught on video taking the sign off the machine and throwing it on the floor. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission says the detector had failed a calibration test but was still able to detect explosives.
A squirrel is being blamed for a power outage in Cranberry Township. The southern part of the township experienced a “large scale power outage” yesterday after an incident with the animal. Officials did not say exactly what the squirrel did to cause the problem. Most service was restored within a few hours.
Hillary Clinton is leading Donald Trump in a new Pennsylvania poll. The Franklin and Marshall College poll was released yesterday and shows Clinton leading Trump 47-to-38-percent among likely voters in the state. The findings also indicate more voters think Clinton is better prepared to handle foreign policy issues and has the character and judgment to be president. Clinton and Donald Trump’s son Eric were both in the Midstate yesterday campaigning.
Voters who still need to register in Pennsylvania have less than a week to do so. The state’s voter registration deadline is fast approaching. All registration for the November 8th election must be done through mail, in person or online by October 11th.
